Emtala - Continuing Education Online

Welcome to ACUTE CARE, INC.'s online Continuing Medical Education (CME) series on EMTALA: Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act.

The CME activity is structured as follows:

  1. Please read the CME Information and Educational Objectives for the presentation, EMTALA, An Overview
  2. Fill out the Registration and Pretest form and submit that information to our Education Department.
  3. You'll be directed to the pretest answers and on to appropriate PowerPoint presentation on this site.
  4. When you are satisfied that you understand the concepts as represented in the objectives, simply follow the link to the Post-Test and submit the form to the Education Department.
  5. You'll be contacted with your score, the right answers (if they differ from your submission), and an e-mail CME certificate. If you'd care to, you may elect to receive a paper copy of this certificate by mail or have the certificate posted as a web page so that you can print the document from your computer.

Educational Objectives:

The participant will be able to:
  • State two rights due a patient presenting to a hospital emergency department for treatment of an emergency medical condition.
  • Define "appropriate transfer".
  • Define "medical screening examination".
  • Explain two consequences of violation of EMTALA.

Statement of Need:

In an effort to assist emergency care practitioners in coping with the increasing medico legal complexity of the practice of medicine, ACUTE CARE, INC. has undertaken a review and discussion of current legal issues of interest to its associates.

Intended Audience and Prerequisites:

Physicians and Mid-level Providers (PA’s, ANP’s) are the intended audience. The course material includes information of interest and import to nursing staff, hospital administration personnel and prehospital providers.

With a history of personal and professional interest in EMTALA, Mr. Hudson has researched the topic and presented many programs concerning this federal mandate.
